The autumn season: an updated look at what lies ahead
First, a look at ongoing dryness and drought-related areas of the nation as of late-September. More than three-fourths of the country is experiencing some degree of abnormally dry or drought-ridden conditions.

Three areas of the country that come into focus are parts of the Northern Plains, westward into the Pacific Northwest. A secondary area is found on much of the Southern Plains and sections of the upper Rio Grande Valley. Lastly, prior to post-Hurricane Helene's storm damage due in large part to excessive if not catastrophic rainfall, much of the Tennessee Valley into the far southern and southeastern Corn Belt, and especially across the lower Ohio Valley, were experiencing extreme to exceptional drought conditions.
