Temps, weather to vary day to day across Heartland

A low-pressure system currently centered north of Lake Superior will race eastward, reaching northern New England on Thursday. Light snow associated with the system will affect parts of the Midwest and Northeast, with snow squalls lingering in the storm’s wake downwind of the Great Lakes.

Along the storm’s trailing cold front, rain in the western Gulf Coast region should total 1-2 inches over the next couple of days. Rain from a subsequent storm system will affect the same general area, starting during the weekend.

Consequently, the five-day rainfall totals could reach 2-6 inches from eastern Texas to the Mississippi Delta. Mostly dry weather will cover the remainder of the country, aside from a return to unsettled weather during the weekend across the Northwest.

Elsewhere, the cold weather that has been affecting much of the central and eastern U.S. will ease by the weekend.

Temps to gradually moderate next week across Heartland

Looking ahead at what the weather forecast has in store for the country next week, the 6- to 10-day outlook calls for near-normal or above-normal temperatures nationwide, with the northern Plains and the Atlantic coast states having the greatest likelihood of experiencing warmer-than-normal weather.

Meanwhile, near- or below-normal precipitation in much of the western and central U.S. should contrast with wetter-than-normal conditions along the Gulf Coast, across the eastern one-third of the U.S., and along and near the Canadian border.
