Wednesday, Sept. 18, kicking off at 10 a.m. CT

Tune in to THE Virtual BEEF Experience Sept. 18 for valuable industry insight and discussion. As part of The Virtual BEEF Experience, the team at BEEF will be digging into a new report on where meat demand is actually coming from as well as hearing the latest outlook on cattle and grain markets. We’ll also learn about a new diagnostic program for the cattle feeding industry and host a roundtable discussion on herd health challenges producers should watch for this fall and winter. Finally, we’ll round out the program with a look at the impact weather could have on this year’s fall calving season.

Please note all presentations will take place from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. CT and will be archived if you would like to view at another time. That being so, we do need you to register so we can allow you access to this free event and the presentations.

The agenda includes the following sessions:

10-10:45- What have learned from meat demand? Where are the markets taking us now?

What consumer segments are buying big in beef? What’s the outlook for cattle prices, grain markets? Glynn Tonsor, Kansas State University and Domenic Varricchio, Pluto Commodities join us to discuss the cattle market outlook.

11-11:30 – New diagnostic program for cattle feeding facilities

A new cattle health initiative has been developed to train feedlot personnel to obtain ante-mortem and post-mortem samples from cattle for surveillance and diagnosis of pathogens that impact the health, performance and profitability of cattle. The program mimics a similar program in the swine industry that was initiated by Iowa State University to train people on-site to sample in the case of a foreign animal disease (FAD) outbreak. The goal is to have people already at the site prepared to take samples efficiently, improving response time to such a natural disaster while not requiring outside people to become contaminated on-site. While PAC’s Certified Sampler program for beef could be used for timely Secure Beef FAD sampling platforms, the focus is surveilling and diagnosing common diseases that impact feedlot cattle health, food safety and food security every day. Joining us to tell us more is Dan Thomson, PhD, DVM of Production Animal Consultation and Farming Unlimited. Dr. Thomson is an Emeritus Professor of Beef Cattle Health and Well-being.

Noon-12:40 – Herd health challenges

With cooler temperatures, wind, rain and snow on the way, what can producers do to support immunity in their cow/calf herds and keep herd health issues to a minimum? Russ Daly, South Dakota State University, and Grant Dewell, Iowa State University, join us for a roundtable discussion on best practices for a healthy fall calving season and how to keep the herd thriving and productive to what reportable and non-reportable viruses and pathogens to watch for this season.

1-1:30 – Dry conditions, devasting wildfires: What to expect this fall calving season?
