The USDA has ruled out some new regulations for lunches. The goal is to bring a stronger focus on farmers and nutrition.
The new changes require more farm to school connections and higher nutrition.
The idea is to elevate school lunches and give farmers a chance to do more marketing to schools.
The USDA wants to provide more protein sources such as yogurt, tofu, seeds, nuts and eggs to young people in school.
The ultimate goal is to reduce sugar content and sodium gradually by offering more choices.
Schools now have the ability to buy directly from local farmers.
The USDA is working to offer more farm to school grants. This year, $14.3 million was awarded.
