Mike Pearson takes a look at new legislation designed to give consumers the choice to purchase E15 all through the year.
The legislation introduced in the House of Representatives is called the National Consumer and Fuel Choice Act. It is designed to replace the waivers that have to get emergency approval to end the amount of time consumers are able to purchase E15 or fuel blended with ethanol.
Fuel producers use a blend of fuel with 15 percent ethanol to power vehicles at the pump.
However, there are concerns about vapor that have limited the use of E15 to summer months but some legislators are hoping to change that and get away from the use of emergency waivers.
Bipartisan house representatives argue that by permanently allowing the use of E15, it would boost local economies and provide opportunities for farmers to market corn year around.
The benefits would include lower emissions in the environment and the consumer would get low cost fuel at the pump.
The hope is that the bill eliminates the need for emergency waivers and provides the fuel all year round to benefit farmers and the economy.
Farm Progress America is a daily look at key issues in agriculture. It is produced and presented by Mike Pearson, farm broadcaster and host of This Week in Agribusiness .
