Mike Pearson examines the status of a potential new farm bill.

The deadline of the 2023 farm bill extension is upon us and all farmer eyes are on what happens next in Congress.

The House of Representatives passed a new version through the ag committee. It's called the Farm Food and National Security Act but a full vote in the house has not happened.

One hurdle has been house democrats who are protesting $30 Billion in cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. The cuts would also strip the ag secretary of the authority over the Commodity Credit Corporation.

The Senate has yet to pass a bill at all. However, democrats have made it clear that it has to balance ag and the nutrition programs.

It's clear divisions remains between democrats and republicans over the farm bill.

A new farm bill could get passed after the election during the lame duck session.

Farm Progress America is a daily look at key issues in agriculture. It is produced and presented by Mike Pearson, farm broadcaster and host of This Week in Agribusiness .
