China is the second most populous country in the world, a home to 20 percent of the world's population and limited on the land.
China has passed a law to become self sufficient in grain by the year 2032. While it has gained grain production 12x over, it is still considered right.
However, the country does continue to modernize and promote the new law for self sufficiency. The new law will protect 500,000 acres of land.
The most recent law will soften China's stance on GMO crops. The law change approved 37 GMO varieties of corn and 14 GMO varieties of soybeans in October 2023.
Besides the changes in seed, China producers will be able to modernize some of the farming practices including using narrow rows and double cropping.
In addition, China is picking up acreage in Africa to ensure a safe food supply and are making connections to South American countries in an effort to have a stable food and grain supply.
Farm Progress America is a daily look at key issues in agriculture. It is produced and presented by Mike Pearson, farm broadcaster and host of This Week in Agribusiness .
